Scott Rolen blasted 2 homeruns and Pedro Martinez struck out 16 batters as the
North Carolina Wright Flyers destroyed the Oshkosh Zephyrs by a score of 17
to 4 at The Hangar.

Rolen was a source of great heartache for the Oshkosh faithful all evening.
He just kept pounding out hits! He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the
2nd inning, quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand Slam (his 5th of the
season) in the 2nd inning, tripled bringing in a run in the 7th inning and
doubled which scored a run in the 8th inning. North Carolina lit up the
scoreboard in the 2nd inning which saw them plate 9 runs on 5 hits. North
Carolina banged out 17 hits on the night.

The win went to Martinez(2-0) who allowed 4 runs in the game. The loss was
charged to Cory Lidle(1-1). He allowed 3 homeruns in 1 and 2/3 innings of
work.

Martinez didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he
had 16 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a
decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty
good, isn't it?'

inning with 6 runs on 5 hits, the 6th inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 6
hits and the 8th inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 4 hits. Astoria had
many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.

Leiter, Varitek Hand Zephyrs First Loss

Mark Leiter pitched very well and much better than his line score might indicate. He gave up a 2-run homerun to Cody Ransom in the 9th after throwing 8 2/3 innings of 3-run ball.
